Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Inter-religious harmony is essential for fostering peace and development in diverse societies like Nigeria, where religion plays a pivotal role in the socio-political fabric. Nollywood, as one of the largest film industries in the world, has increasingly produced films that address themes of unity, tolerance, and understanding across religious divides (Abubakar & Ishaya, 2024). In Bida Central Local Government Area, Niger State, where both Islam and Christianity coexist, Nollywood films serve as a medium to promote mutual respect and collaboration between religious groups (Onyema, 2023). By portraying narratives of coexistence and empathy, these films contribute to reducing tensions and building bridges of understanding among different faith communities (Yahaya, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Religious conflicts have posed significant challenges to peace and development in various parts of Nigeria, including Bida. Despite the potential of Nollywood films to foster inter-religious harmony, there is limited empirical evidence on their impact in this region. This study addresses the gap by examining how Nollywood films contribute to promoting inter-religious understanding in Bida Central (Mohammed, 2024).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the themes of inter-religious harmony depicted in Nollywood films.
  2. To evaluate the impact of these films on audiences’ attitudes toward religious tolerance in Bida Central.
  3. To identify barriers to the effectiveness of Nollywood films in promoting inter-religious harmony.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What themes of inter-religious harmony are depicted in Nollywood films?
  2. How do these films influence audiences’ attitudes toward religious tolerance in Bida Central?
  3. What challenges limit the effectiveness of Nollywood films in fostering inter-religious harmony?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Nollywood films significantly influence attitudes toward inter-religious harmony in Bida Central.
  2. Positive portrayals of inter-religious coexistence in films reduce religious tensions.
  3. Limited access to Nollywood films diminishes their impact on promoting harmony.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study emphasizes the importance of Nollywood films as tools for peacebuilding, offering insights for filmmakers, religious leaders, and policymakers in leveraging media for societal harmony.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of Nollywood films in promoting inter-religious harmony in Bida Central Local Government Area, Niger State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Nollywood: The Nigerian film industry known for producing a wide range of films.
